Week 3

Monday. A new week. It didn’t start auspiciously what with an accident in the bed overnight from #1 Son (a thankfully rare occurrence these days, and only an issue because there are no waterproof sheets on the beds here).

He then needed a bath, which caused massive tantrums from the Tiny Tyrant because I wouldn’t let her share it too.
So I lost my cool before 08:30.

So the hus-creature insisted that I book a nail appointment for Saturday so I can have a little “me time”. I felt a bit guilty (sorry Natalie!) but now I’m looking forward to it.

He’s also trying to arrange a sitter so that we can have a date night.

He is a good egg ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—

#1 Son has done maths today and colouring in made it fun. We aren’t getting remotely as much done as I’d planned and hoped, but I’ve decided to play the long game, and “Slow and Steady” will pay off, since kindergarten seems to be the same as Reception in terms of what the children learn, so just keeping his hand in should be enough. Starting a new school with the diagnosis should help too. Come on insurance as we really need to finish that up.

TT has taken being like her brother to new levels and refuses to carry on eating once he’s done, so I’m balancing that one out now and it’s tricky. Still, she ate a reasonable amount today and he ate everything so I’m counting that as a win.

Afternoon has, so far, gone well. Kids are playing nicely together and are now watching Cars. Which, while not my favourite film, is something that they apparently both enjoy.

I have also discovered what happens when one of my beloved offspring manages to sneak a yellow wax crayon into the tumble dryer and I don’t notice.

Yellow. Washing.

And it was a large load.

I have been doing my own washing for nearly 20 years and this is the worst I’ve ever managed.

They are now back in the washer in the vain hope that a few extra hot cycles may shift it as they are washable crayons.
Daddy came home a little early so that I could attempt to buy a pair of date night shoes.
I unfortunately have very weird feet with dropped arches and one larger than the other and as a result I really struggle with shoes. And I can’t wear stilettos.
TT had fun at least as she loves all things shoe, and appears to have decent taste:

I pray she doesn’t inherit my feet.

I have wine and knitting. Both of these things are good.
Addendum: The washing is now on its third re-wash and at least some of the yellow has already washed out…

  1. Hello Fliss! From here the crayon incident is funny, even without photos, but I am fully aware how annoying it is for you. The problem is the temperature inside the tumble dryer: the crayon melted and afterwards its dye was made more permanent by the heat. I find that bleach often helps to restore whiteness to whites (but don’t use it for coloured items!). Have a look at the labels on the clothes. The crossed out triangle symbol means that you should not use bleach. Soak overnight in a hot SOLUTION of bleach all the white clothes that do not carry the “no bleaching” symbol. Then rinse, and put through the washer one final time. Please let me know the outcome.

The photos of TT in the shoe shop are hilarious, but isn’t she a bit young to be interested in fuck-me shoes?

Your nail must be growing really fast if they have already recovered from the incident at the aquarium. Enjoy the me-time! And your evening out!

I have no idea what time Chris got home last night, as I was fast asleep in bed. He must have caught the last train home after the athletics. On Friday he is attending both morning and evening sessions, with several hours in-between. He’ll be knackered!

    1. I’ll give it a go. So far the repeated washing is yielding some results.

Her taste in shoes is certainly amusing – but I did approve of her choice ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ

  2. Sadly shoes are most times a trade off between looks and comfort. One place you might want to try is the walking company, they have stores all over the country. What I often do is try a shoe in a store and see if I can find it for cheaper on the web! Looks like TT was having a great time in the shoe store, give her a few years and she will steal your shoes! Seems to me a good idea to not push #1 son. Have you already signed up the lease on your house? If so you can sign him up for school. The school district might insist on doing its own evaluation by the way, both to determine how much support he needs in the classroom and protect themselves against lawsuits. Both your cousins were diagnosed with learning differences at various stages of their lives and when we moved back to the US our school district insisted on doing its own diagnostic. Long conversation best held offline.

    1. Thank you so much for everything Domi – I really value your insight and advice.

Yes you’re right about the shoes – i have a small collection of nice shoes I can walk in but they are all on the boat!

I am so looking forward to catching up properly in November x

Ps TT is a total ice addict so I haven’t needed popsicles yet but I think #1 Son might just enjoy them anyway. Yet another thing I’d love to make myself but I only have so many hours in a day right? ๐Ÿ˜‚

      1. U r v welcome. Raising children in a foreign land is the most enchanting of adventure, most times, so please feel free to reach out whenever you have questions! You seem to be doing really well so far as well as managing your energy ๐Ÿ˜Ž it looks like you are really enjoying Boston. And am impressed by how supportive Joe is!

        1. Yeah, he is really, really supportive. If he were not my son I would marry him, but Odile would probably pinch him first from under my nose. Sigh…
